New free essay: Music, Gender segregation, and the Pamir-Kush: a look at some artifacts and music videos, by Kevin Patrick Fitzgerald, Mnoty Press, Naawan, October 2026.

In this essay, I consider two artifacts in the Dunhuang archaeological assemblage in relation to musical practice and gendered segregation in the Pamir and Hindu Kush Mountains (a region I call the Pamir-Kush). My argument is that the Silk Road culture was steeped in the exploitation of women as sexual entertainers with musical accompaniment, and that the conservatism of the people in the mountains provided for a counter-cultural movement whereby women were excluded from participating in public musical practices.

This volume has two essays on a culture region I'm calling the Pamir-Kush region. The Western Himalayan Mountains kind of split to the north as the Pamirs and the southwest as the Hindu Kush. I'm thinking of the region combined to explore some of the relations of the cultural history of the two regions.

I started digging around in the archives and putting work up for sale. This is the beginning of a long project. First is a free jazz piano and percussion piece titled Piano and Ghunroo (2021). New history essay for sale (9 September 2026)

Autustine, Violence, and the Demoralization of the Roman Church by Kevin Patrick Fitzgerald. First published on substack, 7 July 2025. Revised edition, Mnoty Press, Acut Fitzgerald Publishing House, 9 September 2026.

This paper is about the Romanization and militarization of the Christian Church. Its focus is on an essay by Augustine of Hippo justifying Christian use of violence. I argue that Augustine's application of just war theory was superficial, yet it served the Roman Church well as it began to separate its authority from that of the Bishopric of Constantinople.

Framed in contemporary discourse on what it means to be Irish, and the role of Irish people in the present politics of Europe.

A collection of poems dedicated to saintly figures in three spiritual traditions. The subjects span about two thousand years of pre-modern good works, focusing on the virtues demonstrated by these people and the legacies of their good work.

Two volume Album Release

exululamus: Naawan Sessions, vol. 1 & vol. 2

We are excited to publish a two volume album set by exululamus titled 'Naawan Sessions' vol 1 and vol 2.

These albums were recording in Naawan over about a year from Spring of 2025 to early 2026. The core of the work is an exploration of the electric viola, which provides much of the ambience and some of the lead. There are a lot of rattles and bells. There are no drums on the album, although there is quite a bit of beatboxing, and the rhythmic dynamics are more subtle than in exululamus' previous works. There is also more space, largely due to a new mixing practice by which the volumes of the individual tracks are shifted, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. The result is that the fluidity and textures of the layers of sound are more digestible. The first volume has more of the electric viola up front, the second volume has more of an acoustic violin and the rosewood flute as the lead instruments.
